We asked everyone under the sun for suggestions. What could we give out at the event that they would actually use and keep? The winning answer was: “A nice canteen.”
We heard you (ditched the tried and true t-shirt approach) and decided to even throw down some extra cash to get, not just a nice one, but the very best in the industry. A bunch of negotiation and Klean Kanteen slapped our artwork on a 27oz Stainless Steel bottle. We are quite thankful to the team at Parachute Creative for their generous donation of poster / bottle art.
In short, every attendee (unless we get some party crashers) will get for FREE their very own canteen. Even more awesome? Our local outdoor shops sell these exact bottles for about $20-25! The cost of a freelancecamp ticket: $25. So it is no surprise we are feeling pretty darn proud of ourselves right now.
Below is pre-print mach of what the bottle will look like. The artwork wasn’t final at this point but you get the idea.
A HUGE thanks to our sponsors for helping to make this happen.
Preparations for the October Las Vegas event are moving swiftly! The organizer is actively seeking sponsors and volunteers to support the event. If you live in the Las Vegas vicinity and want to lend a hand, leave a comment and we will reach out.
We have had request for ride sharing, as many of you are coming from all over the bay area and beyond. Need a ride from the airport or from the city? Santa Cruz carpool company Zoom Pool has volunteered to help provide ride sharing support. If you are interested click the link below to see if someone else is heading in the same direction.
The folks at Sacramento’s Co-Working space, The Urban Hive are planning to run a freelance camp this October. If you are in the area and want to help out, leave a comment and we will reach out! I will let you know more as soon as I find out.
After a long day of figuring out how to make more money running your business, come hang out, have drinks, east food and be merry. Motiv, a new upscale club / restaurant has thrown open their doors with open arm. Doors open for us at 5pm. DJ comes on at 9:30pm if you want to party and dance the night away.
MOTIV is the vision of two SC natives committed to operating a more refined establishment. Our interest stems from recognizing a type of venue absent from downtown Santa Cruz: A responsible restaurant/bar/nightclub with a safe, fun and engaging atmosphere for mature adults. We will host art shows, political forums and other social events as well as DJ’s from all over to combine culture with entertainment while maintaining a safe and responsible environment. We firmly believe our conscientious business model will satisfy a need within the community as well as raise the expectations of downtown patrons, encouraging the other businesses in the area to follow suit. 1209 Pacific Ave., Between the Gap and Bad Ass Coffee.
Freelance Camp Las Vegas 2009 is an organized BarCamp for freelancers and independent contractors. We are proud to host this under the bright lights of fabulous Las Vegas, NV. You ask: What is a BarCamp? BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The day consists of sessions proposed by attendees and the schedule is created on site the morning of the event. BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn from each other in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants.
DONT QUITE GET IT!?
The concept is easy. Show up. Express interests and concerns. Break off into smaller discussion groups and exchange information and knowledge. Don’t know much about personal health insurance? legal issues facing startups? personal branding? Well, the maybe somebody else does! Hang out and find the answers in a RELAXED and FUN environment!
WHAT TO EXPECT AT FREELANCE CAMP:
The day will start at 10am with an hour of socializing over coffee and pastries. It is really important you arrive by 11am so you can participate in creating the day’s agenda. At 11am sharp we will give directions on how to propose a topic and then we will create a schedule. We will be harvesting the minds and expertise of all the people in the room to come up with topics pertinent to freelancers. If you’d like to lead a session you’re going to want to speak up with your topic idea at 11am, when the schedule is being created.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:
Your own coffee mug
A head full of topic ideas
Your laptop (free wi-fi provided.) If you are not so inclined to arrive with electronic note-taking items a simple notebook and pen will do.
Lots of business cards. This is a great networking opportunity. You can get a quick turnaround from Zazzle.com or Moob.com if you are in need of cards.
VENUE

We now have a venue, which is the newest building on pacific ave right in the middle of down town Santa Cruz! In fact, the building is so new it is completely empty, so we got Palace Office Supply & Office Interiors as a sponsor to set up a series of 5 meeting spaces / lounges. Top floor awesome view, big balconies, 10,000+ square feet of prime space surrounded by some killer restaurants and right up the street from the beach.
We also are now working with Klean Kanteen to get custom stainless steel water bottles for the event. This is going to be the sickest schwag ever. I must see one in the hand of every 10th person walking down the street and they retail for close to $25. You get one along with your ticket! And I am talking the 27oz bottles, not those tinny ones.
Not in the area? Don’t worry! We have a freelance camp coming to Reno soon (date still to be decided). Still out of luck? Start your own. We have already had five freelance camps in 2009 and every freelancer who has put one on sent me personal notes telling stories of how much this has caused a serious boost to their careers and the local economy.
Fire marshal has us capped at 300 people, so that nails down the ticket count. Last year, after my email blast (which we will be sending out around June 18th or so) we sold out in 3 days. As of June 19th we are already down to 221 tickets just based upon word of mouth. So if you want to come, sign up fast.
Who should come? If you sell your services (or are considering it), you are a perfect fit: developer, designer, accountant, blogger, journalist, realtor, lawyer, carpenter, engineer, financial adviser, marketer, sales, musician, artist, inventor… Historically, the bulk of attendees are from hi-tech. We encourage all types of owners to come to provide a balanced perspective to business.

The “Camp” in FreelanceCamp implies that the event is informal with an emphasis on face-to-face interaction with other attendees. “Community-driven” means that the attendees of the conference actually run the conference by discussing topics appropriate to the subject of the event. The presentation schedule is determined on the morning of the conference and anyone is welcome to present.
